We’re launching a new series, “Equity in Action: Praxis Sessions” to highlight the considerable work taking place across the state of California to build equity, inclusion, and social justice.
In Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Paulo Freire defines praxis as “reflection and action upon the world in order to transform it.” In this series, we’ll hear from equity practitioners who are weaving reflection in action, and theory in practice, to transform their colleges into equitable learning environments.
We’ll launch the series at 10am on May 7 with “Finding our Way to Equity.”
Every community college in the state of California has been mandated to focus on equity. SEA (Student Success and Achievement) and Guided Pathways are inviting colleges and educators to reflect, rethink, redesign, and act to achieve equity. But what do we mean by equity and how do we orient ourselves towards it? In this session, we’ll explore our definitions and orientations to equity.
We will begin the session with expectations and agreements for our time together in learning. We all have our own preferences for being in community that are often based on the powerful community experiences we’ve had in our personal, educational, and professional lives. When we enter our work without consciousness of these preferences, we allow dominant ways of being to continue dominating.
A portion of our session will be recorded, so we have an artifact for later viewing/sharing. We will let you know when recording begins and ends, so you are able to put your microphones on mute and turn your videos off to protect your privacy.
After the recording, we’re planning to move into conversation. It’s our hope that you’ll unmute, turn our videos back on, and join the conversation.
Looking forward to being in community and conversation with you!
“Equity In Action: Praxis Sessions” is one of the many offerings of 3CSN’s Wayfinding Online Zoom Series: Navigating the Virtual Landscape Together. This series was launched on May 18th by practitioners for practitioners (and students, too) and continues to grow from the needs that are identified in community with colleagues across the state. There are helpful sessions throughout the day Mondays through Fridays serving participants from across the California Community College system. If you haven’t already, we encourage you to check out the schedule and to be in community with us at this pivotal moment.
