STAR-CA TUTOR AND STUDENT PANEL: WHAT’S ON OUR MINDS? PREPARING TO RETURN TO CAMPUS
Tuesday, May 4 / 11 AM – 12:30 PM

Before the pandemic, one in four community college students sought academic support from a tutoring center, and less than 15% of those tutoring sessions happened online. In the past 14 months, we have all put our tutoring programs online and trained our tutors to collaborate effectively and compassionately with online students. Most programs have experienced significantly higher volume of students seeking help online simply because there were no in-person options available to them. When campuses reopen, will students continue to seek online tutoring support now that they have more experience with it? Have they become accustomed to the convenience and comfortable with the technology? Join our tutor and student panel to hear what they say about the differences between online tutoring and in-person tutoring and how they feel about continued support of online tutoring.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT …
  • The pandemic has caused many faculty members to question if traditional exams are a valid measure of student knowledge and whether or not they actually help develop the skills necessary to be successful beyond the classroom. Biology instructor Holly Schiefelbein chronicled her journey from traditional exams to authentic assessment in the CVC/@ONE article Time for a Change: Authentic Assessment in STEM.
  • In spring 2018, Long Beach City College (LBCC) was ranked 113th out of 114 California Community Colleges for course-level student success. Students of color experienced the greatest obligation gaps in terms of course-level success, retention, and transfer; these gaps were exacerbated in our online classes. Clearly a change was in order. Learn more from Michael Robertson in his CVC/@ONE article, Conducting an Online Course Cultural Curriculum Audit: Steps Toward Student Equity and Success.

CVC’s Online Network of Educators (@ONE) has several upcoming courses to benefit both beginning and advanced online faculty, including:

The full course schedule is available at catalog.onlinenetworkofeducators.org. Colleges can purchase bulk enrollments in the form of coupon codes. This special feature supports the growing need for professional development across the CCC system.
