Join us for this encore of the CVC-OEI/@ONE Humanizing Challenge, taking place January 20-22! You will discover helpful trauma-informed strategies that will help you cultivate a learning environment in which your students feel seen, valued and safe. The three-day Humanizing Challenge will engage you in inquiry about your unconscious biases and how they influence your online teaching. 3CSN: Equity 101 January 11 – March 7, 2020

Dear colleagues,

Now more than ever in light of COVID-19, educators across campus roles are evaluating their practices and wondering how to best support students, in person or remotely. As you plan your professional learning for the new year, please consider Equity 101, an 8-week online course for educators from all areas of campus. Participants will build knowledge about some of the many teaching and learning perspectives for equity and reflect on how to advocate for social justice from where we are, as instructors, managers, or classified staff.

Three (3) post-baccalaureate units will be available for an additional cost ($300, or $100 per unit) from California State University-Dominguez Hills, College of Extended Education. Purchasing CEUs is completely optional, and not required for registration in the course. Course facilitators will provide more information about signing up for the units after the course has begun.

Please note that this course will require one synchronous meeting (day and time TBD by you). All other course assignments are asynchronous.

Additionally, we will offer Equity 102: Critical Reflection and Critical Action for Praxis: Finding our Way to System-wide Transformation and the Creation of Equitable College Ecosystems from March 8th through May 2nd.   Equity 102 is open to all who have completed Equity 101.  Registration information will be emailed to all Equity 101 participants in late January.

In this one-hour session, Grossmont College’s Supervisor of Learning Assistance, Niko Crumpton, will describe a strategy called, “Narrative Tutoring.” This is an educational technique adopted from medical doctors that use narratives to aid medical diagnosis. Peer educators will learn how to help the students tell their own story to learn where they’ve been and where they’re heading. You’ll build stronger connections and give more accurate advice when you know the student’s story. Participants are also invited to stay from 4:00pm – 4:30pm to further explore questions and applications.
